What is a Fractional Laser?

A fractional laser is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a high-powered carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser to improve the appearance of the skin. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser therapy is a powerful laser treatment that is one of the most effective tools in laser medicine.

At Cloud La Med Spa, we use The Matrix CO₂ Fractional Laser for our Laser Skin Resurfacing services.

The Matrix CO₂ Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing minimizes wrinkles and improves skin texture while increasing collagen production through its revolutionary fractionated CO₂ technology.

Matrix CO₂ Skin Resurfacing Fractional Laser is known as:

  • The gold standard resurfacing platform for advanced skin imperfections

  • The "fountain of youth" with proven effectiveness

  • One of the most popular and widely used lasers of all time

  • Revolutionary in its increased comfort and decreased downtime, as opposed to the traditional CO₂ lasers of the past

How does fraction laser work?

The CO₂ fractional laser uses short energy pulses to safely and effectively correct skin imperfections. The short pulses keep you comfortable while providing impressive skin resurfacing results.

CO₂ works by creating microscopic wounds in the skin, which trigger the body's natural healing process, resulting in the production of new collagen and elastin.

To target the skin, the fractional scanner on the laser uses a grid pattern of small light pulses known as MicroAblative Columns (MACs). Each MAC transmits a column of energy that can reach the skin's dermis.

Because each grid is separated, only a small section of your skin is affected at a time (imagine a checkerboard with only the red squares treated). This method leads to quicker healing and reduced downtime.

CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing works:

  • By removing the top layer of skin, the body is prompted to replenish the skin's surface with youthful, healthy new cells.

  • Collagen production beneath the skin's surface is stimulated, resulting in smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin.

Fraxel is another word for fractionated. Some lasers are Fraxel, but that does not mean they are CO₂. The laser needs to be a CO₂ to deliver an excellent resurfacing result.

What are the benefits of laser skin resurfacing?

CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing provides deeper, longer-lasting, rejuvenating results than most other skin treatments. Dr. Elkhalili will adjust the CO₂ laser's settings to:

  • Firm and tighten the skin

  • Even areas of discoloration

  • Diminish acne scars and promote an even skin texture

  • Minimize the appearance of sun damage

  • Smooth fine lines, wrinkles, and folds

What areas can Matrix CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing treat?

The face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and abdomen can all be treated with the CO₂ laser. We can use the CO₂ laser to treat specific areas or rejuvenate your entire face and neck.

What to expect from a Matrix CO₂ Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment?

With the Matrix CO₂ Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing technology, Dr. Elkhalili can control the strength of the treatment to meet your specific needs.

During the treatment, most patients feel a warm, stinging sensation and skin tightening. For less pain during and after the CO₂ laser procedure, anesthetic creams and cooling devices are used. There is also a slight burning smell, which is the skin cells absorbing the CO₂ laser energy.

The actual CO₂ laser treatment time is usually less than 30 minutes, but this depends on the area(s) treated. As always, Dr. Elkhalili can give you an exact length of treatment time after determining your specific concerns.

How long does it take to heal from CO₂ laser resurfacing?

CO₂ laser resurfacing requires 7–10 days of social downtime without makeup to allow the skin to heal. After this time, you will first notice an improvement in surface texture and color as the top layer of your skin is replaced by new, healthy cells.

When considering a CO₂ laser procedure, please schedule it two to three weeks before any special event.

During the first 24 hours after your laser treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned. Your skin will show a pinpoint-like pattern from the therapeutic laser beams. You might have some redness and swelling; this should go away in a few hours, but it could last 2-3 days.

Your skin will peel and be pink for 3–6 weeks. This healing is dependent on the extent of your CO₂ laser treatment. The most significant improvements will show when your skin rebuilds collagen in deeper layers.

How many laser treatments are required?

Depending on your concern, Dr. Elkhalili will determine how many treatments are required for optimal results. Usually, only one or two CO₂ laser treatments are needed. If you need two treatments, the second should be done eight weeks after the first.

How long will the improvement last from my CO₂ laser treatment?

The results depend on your lifestyle and future sun exposure. With good UV protection, the results of your CO₂ laser should last 5–10 years.
